Alpacas from Australia and New Zealand
For many years Alpacas of Wessex have been invloved and imported alpacas out of Australia and NZ . The procedure is relatively straight forward if you know what you are doing. We have a good relationship with many of the breeders over there . The quality and genetics over there go very far back therefore you can find some really high quality alpacas . We have imported from many of the larger breeders and some smaller ones in Australia. In terms of imorting from New Zealand the procedure is very similar although the time frame is much less importing from NZ as opposed to Australia. If you have any queries or would like more information at all on importing please feel free to contact the team at Alpacas of Wessex .
Alpacas from South America
For some years now we have worked very closely with Geoff Scott of ABQ Alpacas in Chile. With him we have now imported alpacas either from Peru or from Chile into various European countries.
Importing from Peru is never easy. There are many hurdles to overcome, not least the ‘Peru Factor’ (click here to see article), and consequently it is an expensive and time consuming operation.
Importing from Chile into most countries is relatively easy and explains why most of the larger imports over the years have come from that country. Currently Chile is blessed with ‘favoured nation’ status by the EU authorities which means that we are allowed to bring animals into Europe direct from Chile with minimal fuss. Alpacas being exported from Peru do not have this health status and consequently have to be transited through a third country for six months.

For other recipient countries please contact us for advice as we can usually help in acquiring information about protocols between nations. Each year we have witnessed new regulations and protocols between countries on importing alpacas. They no doubt will change again at some stage soon.
